The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Dr. Eric Opah, has stirred political reactions after promising to secure the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, if elected governor in the 2027 governorship election.
Opah made the declaration while addressing supporters during a political engagement ahead of the Abia governorship race, describing Kanu’s release as one of his major priorities if he assumes office.
According to the APC candidate, he possesses the influence and capacity to achieve the release of the separatist leader, whose continued detention has remained a sensitive political issue in the South-East.
“I will set Mazi Nnamdi Kanu free once I become Governor of Abia State in 2027. I said it, and I will do it. I have the capacity — don’t doubt me,” Opah declared.
However, the governorship hopeful did not explain the legal or political process through which he intends to secure Kanu’s freedom, considering that the matter is under the control of the Federal Government and the courts.
Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), remains in the custody of the Nigerian government over terrorism-related charges and allegations of treasonable felony, despite repeated calls from South-East leaders and groups for his release.
Political observers say Opah’s statement may resonate with pro-Biafra sympathisers and sections of voters in the region where Kanu enjoys support, but critics argue that the promise could also be viewed as political propaganda aimed at attracting emotional support ahead of the election.
The comment has already generated fresh debate across Abia State and the wider South-East over whether such a promise is realistically achievable by a state governor or merely part of campaign rhetoric designed to win public sympathy.
