Gunmen Kill Eight in Brutal Plateau Community Attack: One Family Targeted in Mbwelle Village, Bokkos
Overview: Gunmen Kill Eight in Plateau Community Attack on Mbwelle Village
Gunmen kill eight residents in a brutal Plateau community attack targeting members of the same family in what survivors and local officials are calling one of the most heartbreaking single-night massacres in recent Bokkos Local Government Area history.
Eight persons have been killed following a late-night attack by gunmen in Mbwelle village, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack has left families shattered, a community traumatised, and Nigerians once again demanding urgent government action to end the relentless cycle of violence across Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.
The victims were members of the same family, while at least three others sustained injuries, and several persons remain missing.
This latest assault comes just days after a series of horrific killings across Plateau State during the Palm Sunday weekend underlining the worsening security situation in the state.

What Happened? Full Timeline of the Plateau Community Attack on Mbwelle Village
The attack unfolded in the dead of night, catching residents completely off guard in what has become a tragically familiar pattern of violence in Bokkos LGA.
10:30 PM-Gunmen Storm Mbwelle Village
The assault reportedly occurred around 10:30 p.m. on April 9, leaving several families in mourning as armed attackers stormed the rural settlement and opened fire before fleeing into surrounding terrain.
The assailants reportedly stormed the community at about 11 p.m., opening fire on residents in a sporadic shooting that lasted nearly an hour.
Who Confirmed the Attack?
Youth Leader of Bokkos, Christopher Luka, confirmed the incident, describing it as “a sad and devastating assault on the people of Bokkos and Plateau State as a whole.” He stated: “The gunmen came around 11pm and started shooting sporadically. They targeted one family mostly. We have eight confirmed dead, some seriously injured, and others still unaccounted for.”
The incident was also disclosed by security analyst Zagazola Makama on X (formerly Twitter), who noted that the killings formed part of a renewed pattern of attacks in parts of Plateau State.

The 8 Victims: Names Confirmed in Plateau Community Attack
In a show of transparency and to honour the fallen, officials and community sources released the full names of those killed in this tragic Plateau community attack.
Those confirmed dead include:
- Elder Iliya Mangut Dakus
- Luck Titus Dakus
- Habila Istifanu Dakus
- Hassan Istifanus Dakus
- Hassan Moses Dakus
- Biggie Lucky Dakus
- Sunday Gideon Dakus
- Innocent Barnabas Makwin
The fact that nearly all victims share the Dakus family name confirms eyewitness accounts that gunmen deliberately singled out one household for the deadly assault.
Victims were identified as residents of the community, including men, youths and an elderly person, with local sources confirming that those injured were also evacuated to the Bokkos Cottage Hospital for treatment.
Several persons remain missing as of the time of this report, with families desperately searching for loved ones in the aftermath of the chaos.

Second Incident on the Same Night: Gunmen Also Kill Father of Three in Riyom LGA
The Mbwelle attack was not the only violent incident recorded in Plateau State on the night of April 9, 2026.
In a deeply disturbing sign of coordinated or concurrent violence across the state, a second murder was confirmed in a separate community.
In a separate incident the same evening, around 6:30 p.m., gunmen ambushed and killed Mr. Christopher Joshua, a father of three from the Byei community in Riyom LGA, along the Gwolhoss–Byei road as he returned home from his daily activities.
The Berom Youth Movement (BYM) described the incidents as part of sustained aggression against Berom communities and expressed concern that such ambushes continued on busy rural roads used by farmers, miners, and travellers, despite security agencies knowing the flashpoints and hideouts of the attackers.
BYM Demands Action on These Key Roads
The association called on security agencies to immediately step up surveillance and patrols along critical corridors, including the Great Commission–Bokkos road, Great Commission–Gashish axis, Rahoss–Rim road, Kwi–Farin Lamba road, Gwolhoss–Jol–Sho road, and Rim–Bachi road.
Security Response: Why Did Help Arrive Too Late After Gunmen Killed Eight in the Plateau Community Attack?
One of the most alarming aspects of this Plateau community attack is the delayed response from security forces a recurring criticism that has plagued multiple incidents across Bokkos LGA in 2026.
Joint security operatives were said to have responded to distress calls shortly after the attack, but the assailants had reportedly escaped before troops arrived at the scene. Security sources attributed the delayed response to the difficult terrain and the distance estimated at about 15 kilometres between the security base and the affected village.
However, community members are not fully satisfied with this explanation.
Kefas Mallai further alleged that security forces did not respond despite the proximity of the area, and that personnel were currently deployed to protect a specific community suspected by natives of Bokkos to be the origin of the attackers.
This allegation raises deeply uncomfortable questions about how security resources are being allocated in Bokkos LGA and whether frontline communities are receiving adequate protection.
Bokkos LGA Chairman Reacts to the Deadly Plateau Community Attack
The Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, Samuel Amalau, spoke with Channels Television and expressed deep concern over the recurring violence in the area. He extended condolences to the bereaved families, noting that the killings were “a direct assault on our collective humanity and peaceful coexistence,” while also wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
Amalau commended security agencies for their efforts, urging residents to support them with timely and credible information to prevent further attacks.
Chairman Calls for Community Vigilance
He stated: “Community vigilance has become more critical now than ever. I call on all residents to remain alert and proactive in safeguarding their neighbourhoods.” He also appealed to youths to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate tensions, even as he reaffirmed the right to lawful self-defence.
He added: “The government is working closely with security agencies to ensure that those behind these atrocities are identified and brought to justice. We remain resolute in restoring lasting peace across Bokkos.”
A Deadly Pattern: This Is Not the First Time Gunmen Kill in a Plateau Community Attack in 2026
The Mbwelle massacre is the latest chapter in a devastating wave of violence that has gripped Plateau State — and particularly Bokkos LGA — throughout early 2026.
March 29–30, 2026 — Palm Sunday Weekend Massacre
At least 30 people were killed in Nigeria’s Plateau State during a Palm Sunday weekend attack, with authorities yet to confirm the identity or motive of the gunmen.
Plateau State government swiftly imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area following the attack, announced by the state Commissioner for Information and Communication, who strongly condemned the “barbaric and unprovoked attacks” on innocent citizens.
March 29, 2026 — Kautikari Community: A Groom Killed 48 Hours Before His Wedding
A heartbroken cousin of Yohanna who was killed only 48 hours before his wedding — said: “We had concluded all necessary arrangements to ensure a befitting church wedding for our Brother Peter Yohanna in Kautikari on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, but we lost him in the bloody Monday attack.”
The Broader Context: Nigeria’s Middle Belt Violence
The violence comes amid ongoing instability in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, a region long affected by clashes often described as involving predominantly Muslim Fulani herders and largely Christian farming communities. However, analysts and policymakers have repeatedly cautioned that the conflict is more complex, pointing to competition over land, climate pressures, and criminal activity as contributing factors alongside religious and ethnic divisions.
Previous Bokkos LGA Attacks in 2026
Bokkos LGA has been repeatedly targeted throughout early 2026:
- Congo & Zarap Communities Attack — Eight killed in two communities in a single night (2024 pattern repeating in 2026)
- Pulka & Banki Ruwa — Military bases and civilian infrastructure targeted
- Angwan Rukuba, Jos North — Gunmen in military uniforms killed residents on Palm Sunday
- Riyom LGA — Father of three ambushed and killed on April 9, 2026 (same day as Mbwelle attack)
Conclusion: Urgent Action Is Needed to Stop Gunmen from Killing More in Plateau Community Attacks
The deaths of eight members of the Dakus family in Mbwelle village represent far more than a news headline — they represent a catastrophic failure of the Nigerian state to protect its most vulnerable citizens.
Every time gunmen kill residents in a fresh Plateau community attack, the same questions are asked, the same condolences offered, and the same promises made yet the killings continue.
What is urgently needed includes:
- Immediate deployment of additional security forces to Bokkos LGA and surrounding areas
- Reduced response time — 15 kilometres should not be an excuse for failure to protect lives
- Proper investigation and prosecution of perpetrators — not just promises of justice
- Community protection infrastructure — fortified safe spaces, early warning systems, and local vigilante support
- Federal Government engagement at the highest level — not just state-level condolences
- Dialogue and root cause resolution — addressing land, resource, and ethnic grievances fuelling the violence
The people of Mbwelle village and all of Plateau State deserve peace, security, and dignity.
The memory of Elder Iliya Mangut Dakus, Luck Titus Dakus, Habila Istifanu Dakus, Hassan Istifanus Dakus, Hassan Moses Dakus, Biggie Lucky Dakus, Sunday Gideon Dakus, and Innocent Barnabas Makwin must never be reduced to a statistic.
Nigeria must do better. Plateau State must be protected. The killing must stop.
