French media giant Canal+ has officially completed the acquisition of MultiChoice Group, the South African parent company of Africa’s leading pay-TV brands DStv and GOtv, in a deal valued at $3 billion.
The transaction marks the end of South African ownership of MultiChoice, one of the continent’s largest media and entertainment companies. The deal was finalised recently, handing control to the French company.
MultiChoice has been a dominant player in African broadcasting for decades, providing satellite television services to millions of subscribers across sub-Saharan Africa. In recent years, the company faced challenges including subscriber losses, rising operational costs, and increased competition from streaming platforms.
What This Means for Subscribers
For millions of DStv and GOtv customers in Nigeria and other African countries, the change in ownership may lead to new strategies, content offerings, pricing reviews, and service improvements in the coming months. Canal+ is expected to bring fresh investment and international expertise to the platform.
This acquisition represents one of the largest media deals in Africa in recent times and highlights growing foreign interest in the continent’s lucrative entertainment and broadcasting sector.
Canal+ now assumes control of a major African media asset, while MultiChoice transitions from its long-standing South African roots to French ownership.
