Professional photographers in Uyo on 19 August 2026, marked World Photography Day 2026 with a visit to the Akwa Ibom State Special Children’s Home, also known as the Motherless Babies’ Home, on IBB Avenue. The outreach was organized by the Association of Professional Photographers and Cinematographers (ASPPACG) as part of this year’s global celebration, themed “HOME: Capturing Hope, Creating Memories.”
Members of ASPPACG spent the day photographing the children, engaging them in games, and creating lasting memories. Beyond the camera work, the association donated clothes, shoes, academic materials, raw food items, toiletries, refreshments, and other essentials to the home.

The manager of the Special Children’s Home commended the gesture, describing it as timely and appreciated, and thanked ASPPACG for bringing both joy and practical support to the children.

President of the Association, Mr. Benaiah Pius, said the choice to celebrate World Photography Day with the children was deliberate.
“Photography is about people, and we chose to use our cameras to capture joy, dignity, and hope,” he said. “These children are part of Akwa Ibom’s story, and our responsibility as creatives is to tell that story with honour. Beyond business, we are community builders. We want to change the narrative and show these children smiling, dreaming, and full of potential.”

Looking ahead, ASPPACG said it hopes to train interested children who are of age in photography and videography, in line with the association’s broader commitment to human capacity development. The group also called on corporate organizations to partner with it on future community projects.
World Photography Day is observed globally every August 19. The date marks the anniversary of a historic 1839 announcement, when the French government acquired the patent for the Daguerreotype — the first practical process for permanent photography — and released it as a free gift to the world. The modern global observance began in 2010, led by the World Photography Organisation.

For ASPPACG, the 2026 celebration translated the theme “HOME: Capturing Hope, Creating Memories” into direct action — service, documentation, and community impact at the Akwa Ibom State Special Children’s Home.
