The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced a major boost to Nigerian football with a huge increase in prize money for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The champions of the next season will receive a minimum of ₦1 billion, a significant jump from the previous N200 million. This was revealed by NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko on Tuesday in Abuja.
In addition to the increased prize money, the NSC has set a new minimum wage of ₦2 million for NPFL players. This is aimed at improving the welfare of players and raising the overall standard and attractiveness of the league.
Shehu Dikko described the new package as part of broader efforts to professionalise the NPFL, attract better investment, and motivate clubs and players to deliver higher quality football.
The announcement has been welcomed by many stakeholders who see it as a positive and ambitious step towards reviving the glory of Nigerian club football.
This development is expected to make the NPFL more competitive, encourage greater sponsorship, and help retain top talents who often move abroad in search of better pay.
With these financial incentives, the next NPFL season promises to be more exciting as clubs and players strive for the huge rewards on offer.
