Despite the name, tiger nuts aren’t nuts at all — they’re small underground tubers, and one of the more overlooked additions you could make to your diet. They’ve been a staple in parts of Africa, the Mediterranean, and Latin America for generations, prized as much for their nutritional density as their naturally sweet, nutty flavour. Modern nutrition research is starting to catch up with that tradition, pointing to real benefits around gut health, blood sugar regulation, and heart-healthy fats. They’re also naturally free of gluten and dairy, which makes them a rare find for people navigating dietary restrictions without sacrificing flavour or nutrition. Here are 6 Health benefits worth knowing about this underrated tuber.
1. They’re not actually nuts
Tiger nuts are tubers, not tree nuts or legumes — which is why they’re naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and safe for most nut allergy sufferers. This has made tiger nut milk a popular plant-based alternative for people avoiding dairy or common allergens.
2. They’re packed with resistant starch and fibre
Tiger nuts are unusually high in resistant starch, a type of fibre that feeds beneficial gut bacteria and slows glucose absorption — helping steady blood sugar and energy levels rather than spiking them.
3. Their fat content rivals olive oil
Most of the fat in tiger nuts is monounsaturated, the same heart-healthy type found in olive oil. It’s also what gives them their naturally sweet, nutty taste — no added sugar required.
4. They deliver iron and potassium in a plant-based package
For anyone building a plant-based diet, tiger nuts offer a useful mineral boost — iron for oxygen transport and energy, and potassium for nerve and muscle function, including a healthy heartbeat.
5. The oil has uses beyond the kitchen
Cold-pressed tiger nut oil is edible and comparable to olive oil in cooking, but it’s also gaining traction in cosmetics for its moisturizing properties — a lesser-known use for a lesser-known tuber.
6. They carry centuries of folk reputation
In parts of Nigeria and the Mediterranean, tiger nuts have long been linked to vitality, libido, and fertility. The science hasn’t caught up to the folklore, but the association speaks to how deeply embedded this tuber is in traditional food culture.
Raw, soaked, milled into flour, or blended into milk — tiger nuts pack a lot of nutrition into a very small package.
