The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched an investigation into allegations of criminal defamation, cyberstalking, and related offences following a petition filed on behalf of Senator Effiong Bob.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the petition dated June 17, 2026, was submitted through Samuel Ikpo & Company Chambers, accusing Mr. Ewa Okpo of allegedly publishing and circulating videos and other materials on social media platforms containing statements described as false, malicious, and damaging to the reputation of the senator.
The Police said that upon receiving the petition, it commenced investigation and subsequently arrested the suspect, who is currently in custody and assisting with the ongoing probe.
The Command warned that social media platforms must not be used as a tool for criminal activities, stressing that while citizens have the constitutional right to freedom of expression, such freedom does not permit the spread of false information, cyberstalking, defamation, blackmail, or content capable of damaging another person’s reputation.
The Police further cautioned individuals who hide behind anonymous accounts or digital platforms to commit offences, noting that offenders can be traced, investigated, arrested, and prosecuted.
It also warned that people who knowingly share, repost, or promote alleged false and malicious content could face legal consequences if investigations establish their involvement.
The Command assured that the investigation would be carried out professionally and in accordance with the law, adding that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted before a court of competent jurisdiction.
Members of the public were advised to exercise responsibility and restraint in their use of social media, with the Police reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights, reputation, and security of law-abiding citizens.
