Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former Governor of Kano State, has officially called on his massive support base and all Nigerians to rally behind the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following his high-profile decision to join the party.
In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Rabiu Kwankwaso noted that this strategic move was guided by a profound commitment to democratic ideals and the urgent necessity to build a credible, alternative political platform for the nation.
“Yesterday, we took a bold and decisive step by formally joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress. This move reflects a deep commitment to democratic values,” Kwankwaso stated. “We are determined to provide our people with a credible platform where they can thrive and realize their full potential.”
The former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) urged Nigerians to align with the NDC in a collective pursuit of better leadership. Rabiu Kwankwaso emphasized that the party represents a fresh start for those disillusioned with the current political landscape.
“I therefore call on all our dedicated supporters and well-meaning Nigerians to join the NDC and stand with us in this renewed fight for good governance and true democracy,” he added.
The Obi-Kwankwaso Alliance Solidified
As previously reported by PUNCH Online, both Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso formally entered the NDC fold on Sunday in Abuja. The two opposition heavyweights were received during a formal ceremony, where they urged party members to avoid internal litigation and focus squarely on national development.
Key highlights of the transition include:
Ideological Alignment: Both leaders cited a shared vision for education, security, and youth empowerment.
Resignation from Previous Tiers: Peter Obi joined the NDC shortly after his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Voter Mobilization: A call for all Nigerians, including those in the diaspora, to register with the NDC ahead of the May 6 register submission deadline.
During the reception, Obi spoke highly of the partnership, noting that Rabiu Kwankwaso is a leader who has consistently been at the forefront of human capital development.
“Kwankwaso is a leader who has been at the forefront of education, providing primary care and putting people out of poverty,” Obi remarked. “We want to build a country where a child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody.”
In his closing remarks, Rabiu Kwankwaso confirmed that his team had consulted extensively with the NDC leadership to ensure their “ideology and blueprint” were in total sync. With the NDC set to submit its official register on May 6, 2026, the Kwankwassiyya leader urged swift registration for those interested in contesting future elections under the new umbrella.
