UEFA has issued a strongly worded statement condemning the decision to suspend the implementation of a one-match automatic suspension given to USA striker Folarin Balogun after receiving a red card.
In an official statement released on Monday, July 6, 2026, UEFA described the ruling as crossing “a red line” and an “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.”
The European football governing body emphasised that football relies on clear, consistent rules to ensure fairness and transparency.
According to UEFA, a minimum one-match automatic suspension following a red card is a fundamental principle embedded in the regulations and should not be subject to exceptions, especially during an ongoing tournament like the World Cup.“
When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined,” the statement read.

UEFA further argued that the decision creates an unfair precedent, as several other players in the same tournament have already served similar suspensions without any leniency. The body warned that such selective application of rules could damage the credibility of the World Cup and have wider negative consequences for football globally.
The statement comes after authorities reportedly decided to allow Balogun to play in Norway’s quarter-final clash despite his red card, prompting widespread debate about consistency in officiating and disciplinary matters.
Folarin Balogun, who has Nigerian roots, has been one of the standout performers for the United States in the 2026 World Cup, scoring multiple goals including a brace against Brazil in the Round of 16.
While many American fans celebrated the decision to let him continue playing, UEFA’s firm stance has reignited discussions about the need for uniform application of rules in major tournaments.
As the 2026 World Cup progresses into the quarterfinal stage, this controversy adds another layer of drama to what has already been a highly competitive and unpredictable tournament.
