Senegal to Appeal CAF AFCON Decision at CAS as Players React Online

Senegal appeal CAF AFCON decision after the Confederation of African Football’s Appeal Board awarded the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title to Morocco through a controversial ruling that has sparked outrage across Senegal’s football community.

In an official statement released on March 17, 2026, the Senegalese Football Federation, also known as the FSF, confirmed that it will challenge the verdict at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The federation described the decision as unfair, unprecedented, and completely unacceptable.

Senegal Appeal CAF AFCON Decision Over Final Ruling

The dispute comes from the AFCON 2025 final between Senegal and Morocco. CAF’s Appeal Board later ruled the match as a 3-0 forfeiture in Morocco’s favour, effectively stripping Senegal of the title.

The board acted on a complaint submitted by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and relied on Articles 82 and 84 of the competition rules, which deal with misconduct and match forfeiture.

What made the situation even more controversial was the reversal of CAF’s earlier disciplinary decision. The Appeal Board said Morocco’s right to a fair hearing had been affected during the first process, which opened the door for the case to be reviewed again. That review eventually ended in Morocco’s favour.

For Senegal, however, the issue goes beyond the final scoreline. The federation believes the ruling raises serious concerns about fairness, consistency, and the credibility of African football administration.

Federation Rejects Verdict, Prepares CAS Move

The FSF has made it clear that it will not accept the judgment without a legal fight. In its response, the federation said it had received notice of the decision but strongly rejected both the process and the conclusion reached by CAF’s Appeal Committee.

By deciding that Senegal violated the tournament rules, CAF effectively handed the title to Morocco through administrative action rather than football played on the pitch. That outcome has become the center of the current crisis.

Now that Senegal appeal CAF AFCON decision, the matter is expected to move to CAS in Lausanne, where international sports disputes are handled. If the case is accepted, it could become one of the biggest legal battles in recent African football history.

Senegal Players React on Social Media

The reaction has not been limited to officials alone. Several Senegal players have taken to social media to express anger and disbelief over the ruling.

Crystal Palace winger and Senegalese international Ismaila Sarr delivered a defiant response on his Instagram story, first posting a laughing emoji before following up with a photograph of himself proudly holding the AFCON trophy a clear statement that he and his teammates remain the rightful champions regardless of CAF’s administrative decision.

Everton stalwart and national team veteran Idrissa Gueye delivered perhaps the most poignant response, sharing a powerful message alongside images from the trophy celebration. In his first Instagram story post, featuring a photo of the Senegalese team lifting the trophy, Gueye wrote in French:

“Titles, trophies, medals… all of that is only temporary. What truly matters is that every supporter can return home and reunite with their family.
The Senegalese people have shown who they are: dignified in victory, dignified in hardship. That is Teranga (Senegalese hospitality/spirit).
We know what we experienced that night in Rabat. And that, no one can ever take away from us, God willing.”

He followed this with a second story showing himself holding the trophy with one hand while making a shushing gesture (finger to lips) with the other, accompanied by the caption: “tioki tioki…..nopilen” – a Wolof phrase that roughly translates to “talk, talk…but say nothing of substance.”

Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara was even more direct, posting on his Instagram story in French: “C’est quand le défilé des M****? Mama Africa?” and “Qui va venir récupérer nos médailles?” which translates to: “When is the parade of the M****** happening, Mama Africa?” and “Who will come and collect/pick up our medals?”

At least four other members of the squad are reported to have shared similar sentiments across various platforms, reflecting the collective anger and sense of injustice felt throughout the Senegalese camp including Illiman Ndiaye of Everton and Niakhate.

These responses show that the issue is not just legal but deeply emotional for the players, many of whom believe they earned their success on the field.

Wider Questions for CAF and African Football

As Senegal appeal CAF AFCON decision, the controversy is also raising wider concerns about governance in African football. Critics are questioning whether CAF’s disciplinary and appeal systems are transparent enough and whether similar rules are applied consistently across major competitions.

AFCON is meant to be remembered for football excellence, but this dispute risks overshadowing the tournament itself. For Senegal, the case is now about more than one trophy. It has become a fight over sporting fairness, institutional accountability, and the integrity of the competition.

Final Note

The decision may currently stand in Morocco’s favour, but the story is far from over. With Senegal appeal CAF AFCON decision at CAS, the final outcome of AFCON 2025 could still face another dramatic twist.

If the case proceeds, the last word on the championship may come not from CAF, but from an international arbitration panel in Switzerland.

This sure looks like a justifiable crash-out, lol. We await the CAF verdict on this matter.
