The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has welcomed former senator Iyabo Obasanjo back into its fold and handed her the party’s senatorial ticket for Ogun Central ahead of the next election.
Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, previously represented Ogun Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2011 before losing her re-election bid.
After years in academia in the United States, the former lawmaker returned to active politics and initially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), where she contested for the party’s governorship ticket.
Following her unsuccessful attempt to secure the APC governorship ticket, Obasanjo resigned from the party on May 31 and returned to the PDP.
She was formally received by the PDP during a rally in Abeokuta attended by party leaders, supporters and the party’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu.
The state PDP chairman, Abayomi Tella, presented the party’s flag to Obasanjo and announced her as the candidate for the Ogun Central senatorial district.
Accepting the ticket, Obasanjo pledged commitment to the PDP and promised to serve with integrity, humility and dedication if elected.
She said her decision to leave the APC was influenced by what she described as disrespect, betrayal and unfair treatment from the party leadership.
The former senator maintained that she remains a strong political force in Ogun Central, pointing to her previous experience in the Senate as an advantage.
Meanwhile, Adebutu reaffirmed his commitment to good governance, promising to promote local government autonomy and transparency if elected governor.
He also assured residents that public resources would be managed responsibly and that local governments would receive their statutory allocations without interference.
The development marks Obasanjo’s return to the PDP as she begins a fresh political contest for the Ogun Central Senate seat.
