Senate President Godswill Akpabio has threatened legal action against the contractor that renovated the National Assembly complex over recurring technical failures affecting both the Senate and House of Representatives.
Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary, Akpabio expressed frustration after senators repeatedly struggled with malfunctioning microphones, describing the situation as a national embarrassment.
He recalled facing a similar embarrassment on Tuesday during the opening of the 2026 National Assembly Open Week, when technical faults also disrupted proceedings in the House of Representatives.
Akpabio said the same contractor handled the renovation of both legislative chambers and warned that the Senate would seek legal redress if the problems persist.
According to him, the Senate leadership is already documenting the repeated technical failures as evidence to support possible court action.
Since lawmakers returned to the renovated chambers in April 2024, the National Assembly has continued to experience faulty microphones, poor audio quality, and a non-functional electronic voting system despite billions of naira reportedly spent on the project.
The persistent glitches have forced lawmakers to abandon electronic voting and revert to manual voting during key legislative decisions, including deliberations on constitutional amendment bills such as the proposal for state police.
