Defence Minister Christopher Musa has assured Nigerians living abroad that the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to improve security and border management.
Musa gave the assurance during an engagement with members of the Nigerian community in Angola.
The meeting was held in Luanda on the sidelines of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
The Nigerian delegation, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, used the meeting to listen to concerns raised by diaspora Nigerians.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa and Nigeria’s Acting Chargé d’Affaires in Angola, Ambassador Maxy Ogbede, also attended.
Musa commended the Nigerian community for maintaining a good relationship with the country’s diplomatic mission.
He said the administration of President Bola Tinubu remained committed to tackling security threats across the country.
“Every sector is receiving targeted interventions to enhance our national security framework,” Musa said.
The minister acknowledged that instability in the Sahel region continues to pose security challenges for Nigeria.
He, however, said the government was strengthening border controls to prevent such threats from spilling into the country.
“Some of our ongoing challenges stem from regional instability in the Sahel, which trickles across our borders,” he said.
“However, comprehensive border management measures are actively being implemented to curb these incursions.”
Musa also stressed the importance of reliable data in strengthening national security and development planning.
Tunji-Ojo, on his part, highlighted improvements in Nigeria’s data protection and identity management systems.
He said stronger collaboration among government agencies was already yielding results in the fight against insecurity.
Dabiri-Erewa assured Nigerians in Angola that the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission would continue to support their welfare.
She also said the commission would promote stronger links between Nigerians abroad and the country.
The Luanda engagement is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to keep Nigerians in the diaspora informed about developments at home.
It also comes as the government faces continued security challenges linked to instability across the Sahel region.
