Argentina national team captain Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football in an emotional statement released on Monday.
In a post made on his official Instagram page, the 39-year-old Inter Miami star confirmed that he is stepping away from the national team after 20 years, stating that the decision “hurt and still hurts deep inside,” but that he understands the time has come.

Messi revealed that he wrote the statement on 21 July, two days after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. He said the recent death of his father, Jorge Messi, has made him even more convinced of the decision.
In the message, Messi reflected on his long career with the Albiceleste:
“I swear I always gave everything, not only in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too. I always fought and gave everything for this shirt, to bring you happiness and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.”
He added that he has nothing more to give and that talented young players coming through deserve their opportunity. Messi thanked the fans for 20 years of love, his family, coaches, teammates and directors, and said he leaves with peace and pride after sharing unforgettable moments with the supporters.
“Thank you God for making me Argentine. Vamos Argentina!”
Messi ends his international career as Argentina’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, having won the 2022 World Cup, two Copa América titles and the Finalissima, among other honours. His final appearance came in the 2026 World Cup final.
The announcement marks the end of an era for Argentine football, though Messi is expected to continue playing at club level with Inter Miami.
