Hantavirus is a serious rodent-borne virus that has recently captured global attention following a rare cluster of cases aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship in 2026. The outbreak, which originated from South America and involved the Andes virus strain, resulted in multiple confirmed infections and deaths among passengers, underscoring the ease with which the virus can spread in confined environments and the importance of vigilance during international travel.

Although infections remain relatively uncommon, Hantavirus has a long history of causing severe outbreaks with high fatality rates, making public awareness crucial — especially in Nigeria, where rodents thrive in many urban and rural settings. Below are seven important facts everyone should know:

1. What Is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus refers to a family of viruses primarily carried by rodents such as rats, mice, and voles. In humans, it causes two major syndromes: Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which severely affects the lungs and cardiovascular system (common in the Americas), and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), which impacts the kidneys and blood vessels (more prevalent in Europe and Asia). Rodents remain asymptomatic carriers but shed the virus in urine, droppings, and saliva.

2. Major Historical Outbreaks

The virus gained international prominence in 1993 during a deadly outbreak in the Four Corners region of the United States (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah), where a mysterious respiratory illness killed several healthy young people. This event led to the identification of the Sin Nombre virus. Notable past outbreaks include:

– 1996 in Argentina, where human-to-human transmission of the Andes virus was first documented.

– 2018-2019 in Epuyén, Patagonia (Argentina), with at least 29 cases and 11 deaths — one of the largest recorded clusters involving person-to-person spread.

– 2012 Yosemite National Park (USA), where 10 cases and 3 deaths were linked to infected deer mice in tent cabins.

–2026 MV Hondius cruise ship outbreak, involving passengers who had travelled through Argentina, with multiple confirmed Andes virus cases and fatalities, triggering global alerts and contact tracing across several countries.

These incidents underscore the virus’s potential for rapid impact in specific environments.

Hantavirus

3. How Is It Transmitted?

Humans typically contract Hantavirus by inhaling aerosolised particles from infected rodent droppings, urine, or saliva — especially when disturbing contaminated areas like attics, sheds, or campsites. Less common routes include rodent bites or direct contact with contaminated surfaces followed by touching the face. Important note: Most strains do not spread between humans. However, the Andes virus (South America) has documented limited person-to-person transmission through close contact or bodily fluids.

4. Early Symptoms Mimic the Flu

Symptoms usually appear 1 to 8 weeks after exposure and begin with flu-like signs: high fever and chills, Severe muscle aches (especially large muscles in the back and legs), Headache and dizziness, Fatigue, Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain

In HPS cases, these can rapidly progress to coughing and severe shortness of breath as fluid fills the lungs.

5. It Can Become Life-Threatening

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome has a case fatality rate of up to 38-50% once respiratory symptoms develop. HFRS carries a lower but still significant mortality rate of 1-15%. Survivors often require intensive care, including mechanical ventilation and blood pressure support. Early hospital intervention significantly improves outcomes.

6. No Specific Treatment or Vaccine

There is no approved vaccine or specific antiviral for most hantavirus strains. Treatment remains supportive, focusing on managing symptoms and complications. Ribavirin has shown limited benefit in some HFRS cases but is generally ineffective against HPS.

7. Prevention Is Your Best Defence

Prevention centres on rodent control and safe cleaning practices include; sealing entry points in homes and buildings, storing food in airtight containers and maintaining cleanliness. Others are wearing masks, gloves, and using disinfectants when cleaning rodent-infested areas — never sweep or vacuum dry droppings. Also, avoid sleeping in areas with signs of rodent activity. Additionally, practise good hygiene, particularly in storage facilities, farms, or during travel.

Risk in Nigeria and Broader Context

While Hantavirus cases are rarely officially reported in Nigeria and Africa, the abundance of rodents in many communities, combined with limited surveillance, suggests possible under-detection. The recent 2026 cruise ship incident involving travellers from South America serves as a reminder of how global mobility can introduce risks.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and health authorities advise prompt medical attention for rapidly worsening flu-like symptoms, especially after potential rodent exposure. Hantavirus reminds us of the constant threat posed by zoonotic diseases and the value of environmental hygiene and rodent control. Although the overall risk to the general public remains low, simple preventive measures can greatly reduce danger.

As international travel resumes and climate factors influence rodent populations, staying informed is essential. Seek immediate medical care if you suspect exposure.

TimesNigeria.com encourages readers to maintain high standards of cleanliness and consult healthcare professionals when necessary.
