Tony O. Elumelu, one of Nigeria’s most prominent bankers and entrepreneurs, is set to retire as Group Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) on August 21, 2026.
The retirement follows the completion of his 12-year tenure as a non-executive director, in line with the regulations of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The UBA Board of Directors via it’s official social media channels has formally announced the development and confirmed the appointment of long-serving non-executive director, Emmanuel N. Nnorom, as the new Group Chairman, effective the same day.

Elumelu has played a pivotal role in the transformation of UBA into one of Africa’s leading financial institutions. Under his chairmanship, the bank significantly expanded its footprint across the continent and strengthened its position as a major player in global banking.
His retirement marks the end of an era for UBA, where he has been instrumental in driving strategic growth, digital transformation, and corporate governance standards.
