The Akwa Ibom State Government has received food and non-food relief materials from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for families affected by recent floods across the state.
Receiving the items in Uyo on Tuesday, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, commended the church for supporting the state’s humanitarian response.
Ibanga said the donation demonstrated the church’s commitment to helping vulnerable residents and strengthened its partnership with the state government.
She also recalled the church’s earlier donation of wheelchairs and walking aids to Akwa Ibom, including the training of local technicians on their assembly and maintenance.
The Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Deputy Governor, Joseph George Esidem, said the floods damaged homes, businesses, farmlands and crops in several parts of the state.
Esidem assured that the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, in collaboration with NEMA, would ensure that the relief materials reached genuine victims.
He promised that the distribution would be equitable and transparent.
A representative of the church’s Africa West Area Presidency, Elder Christian Chibundu, said the intervention was inspired by the organisation’s belief in love, compassion and service to humanity.
He said the materials were intended to provide food, comfort and support to families affected by the disaster.
The donated items include 1,500 bags of 25kg rice, beans, garri, corn, noodles and 1,000 gallons of vegetable oil.
Other items include sugar, salt, seasoning cubes, tomato and pepper mix, mosquito nets, sanitary pads, detergents, soap, blankets and toilet rolls.
A flood victim, Idongesit Dan, thanked the church and the state government for coming to the aid of affected families.
