The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation after an Enugu Air aircraft skidded off the runway while landing at Benin Airport in Edo State on Thursday.
The aircraft, an Embraer E170 operating as Flight 4264 with registration 5N-ENR, was travelling from Lagos to Benin when it overran the end of Runway 05 at about 3:10 p.m.
NSIB said all 68 people onboard, comprising 63 passengers and five crew members, were safely evacuated without injuries.
According to the bureau, its rapid-response Go Team arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to examine the aircraft, interview the crew, and inspect the runway as part of the investigation.
NSIB Director-General, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., said every runway excursion is treated as a serious safety occurrence, regardless of whether injuries are recorded.
He noted that the safe evacuation of all passengers and crew was encouraging but stressed that a thorough and independent investigation would determine the cause of the incident.
Enugu Air also confirmed the runway excursion, saying the affected aircraft was one of its Embraer regional jets. The airline said all passengers and crew were safely evacuated and warned that some flight schedules could be adjusted while investigations continue.
The incident gained attention after rapper and content creator Chinedu, popularly known as Triple Pin, shared his experience on Instagram. He said heavy rainfall reduced visibility during landing, forcing the aircraft to circle several times before it eventually skidded off the runway.
The NSIB said further updates would be provided after investigators complete their review of evidence gathered from the aircraft, flight crew, and runway conditions.
