LIV Golf Secures $300m Financing, Players Given Until October 25

LIV Golf has secured a potential $300 million financing package from BC Partners Credit as it seeks to emerge from bankruptcy protection and prepare for the 2027 season.

The funding could provide a major boost to the Saudi-backed golf league, although its future remains uncertain.

LIV filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States in September after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) withdrew its multibillion-dollar backing.

The move triggered a court-supervised restructuring process that the league hopes to complete in early 2027.

Since its launch in 2021, PIF has reportedly spent more than $5 billion on LIV Golf, attracting major players with lucrative contracts and substantial prize money.

However, uncertainty has grown around the league after its 2026 season ended early.

BC Partners Credit said its financing would support the next stage of LIV Golf, including a proposed model in which players become equity owners of the league and its teams.

The agreement is still subject to approval by the bankruptcy court and other conditions.

It remains unclear how much of the $300 million LIV will actually require to launch its 2027 schedule or which players will remain with the league.

BC Partners Credit partner Ted Goldthorpe described the financing as a way to help LIV emerge from restructuring with a stronger financial foundation.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil also described the deal as a significant step towards creating a player-owned and team-focused global league.

The agreement has also extended the deadline for LIV Golf’s discussions with its players to October 25.

BBC Sport reports that players are not required to remain with LIV’s proposed new structure, even if they previously signed multi-year contracts with the league.

LIV players are owed at least $45 million and have the option of leaving the league.

The 2026 line-up included stars such as Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Cameron Smith and Louis Oosthuizen.

Court documents show that Rahm has the largest unsecured claim among LIV players, at $7.5 million.

DeChambeau is owed $5.7 million, while Johnson is listed at $5.5 million.

Cameron Smith is owed $4.8 million, Tyrrell Hatton $3.4 million and Brooks Koepka $1.7 million.

Koepka left LIV Golf in January to rejoin the PGA Tour.

Fourteen current and former LIV players are among the league’s 30 largest unsecured creditors, with their claims totalling just over $45 million.

A source familiar with the figures said the amounts represent money owed and unpaid for the third quarter of 2026, rather than the players’ full contractual earnings.

As part of the bankruptcy process, PIF is providing LIV with a $49.6 million debtor-in-possession loan to help fund its operations during restructuring.

The new $300 million financing gives LIV Golf its clearest path yet towards staging a 2027 season.

However, court approval is still required, the amount eventually used remains uncertain and players are free to walk away.

The outcome of the negotiations ending October 25 could determine which of LIV Golf’s biggest stars, if any, join the proposed player-owned “LIV 2.0.”
