Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has seen a massive surge in its legislative strength as no fewer than 17 members of the House of Representatives defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the party.

The defections were officially announced on the floor of the House during plenary on Tuesday. This wave of movement to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) includes high-profile lawmakers such as Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, and Afam Ogene, among others. In a related development, Leke Abejide defected from the ADC to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The arrival of these 17 lawmakers into the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) comes just two days after political heavyweights Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso formally joined the party.

The duo received their Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) membership cards on Sunday after a closed-door meeting with the party’s national leader, Senator Seriake Dickson. Obi cited a “toxic” political climate and internal crises within his former party as the primary reasons for seeking a more stable platform.

The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) is being positioned as a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections. Key reasons cited for the shift include:

Internal Stability: National leader Senator Seriake Dickson described the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) as a party “devoid of litigation and factions.”

Rapid Growth: Dickson labeled the NDC as Nigeria’s fastest-growing political party, ready to “box above its weight.”

Ideological Alignment: Both Obi and Kwankwaso have emphasized that the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) offers a peaceful family focused on national development rather than internal strife.

The lawmakers who have now pledged their allegiance to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) include:

  1. Yusuf Datti

  2. Uchenna Okonkwo

  3. Adamu Wakili

  4. Thaddeus Attah

  5. George Ozodinobi

  6. Lilian Orogbu

  7. Oluwaseyi Sowunmi

  8. Peter Aniekwe

  9. Mukhtar Zakari

  10. George Oluwande

  11. Munachim Umezuruike

  12. Emeka Idu

  13. Jesse Onuakalusi

  14. Ifeanyi Uzokwe

  15. Afam Ogene

  16. Murphy Omoruyi

  17. Abdulhakeem Ado

Welcoming the new members, Senator Dickson thanked the lawmakers for investing their trust in the vision of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), noting that the party has defied all odds to become a major force in just five months.
