The Rivers State Police Command has relieved the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing a police outpost of their duties following a viral video allegedly showing suspected cultists celebrating the renovation of the facility.
The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, also ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the renovation and the alleged involvement of suspected cultists.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday, October 16, 2026, by the command’s spokesperson, Blessing Agabe.
The investigation followed the circulation of footage reportedly showing individuals suspected to be cult members at the renovated Abuloma Police Outpost on Thursday, October 15.
In the video, the individuals were allegedly seen chanting “greatest Nigerian students” and other slogans believed to be associated with cult groups while celebrating in front of the facility.
Some of them reportedly wore white shirts and black trousers, with red fez caps and black berets visible among the group.
Anti-cultism platform Naija Confra also shared videos and photographs purportedly showing individuals chanting slogans, including “Aromate,” after taking pictures with police officers at the station.
Reports also linked the gathering to October 15, the reported anniversary of the Vikings confraternity. However, the identities and affiliations of those involved have not been conclusively established.
The police command said the investigation would determine who financed or facilitated the renovation, whether the project received the necessary approval and whether any officers breached professional standards.
It expressed concern that any association with suspected cult groups could undermine public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and compromise its institutional integrity.
“The Command strongly condemns any action or association capable of compromising the integrity, discipline and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force or conferring legitimacy, recognition or acceptance on suspected cult groups or other unlawful organisations,” the statement said.
Consequently, the DPO and the officer overseeing the affected outpost have been queried and removed from their positions pending the outcome of the investigation.
The command explained that the administrative measures were intended to ensure a thorough inquiry and establish the responsibilities of everyone involved.
However, the officers’ removal does not establish that they committed any offence. Their culpability, if any, will depend on the findings of the investigation.
The police warned that anyone found responsible for misconduct or unlawful activity would face appropriate disciplinary measures and possible legal action.
The command acknowledged that community members and private individuals could legitimately contribute to improving police facilities.
It cited Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund.
However, it stressed that such contributions must follow established procedures and must not compromise police independence, security or professional standards.
The command added that donations or other forms of assistance would not shield anyone from investigation or prosecution where wrongdoing was established.
It reiterated its commitment to discipline, accountability and the enforcement of the law, warning against conduct capable of damaging public trust in the police.
Residents were urged to remain calm and provide credible information to support security operations across Rivers State.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the renovation, the identities and affiliations of those involved, and whether any police personnel violated their professional responsibilities.
