Suspected thugs have reportedly attacked the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) secretariat in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, damaging property and raising concerns about political violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The incident, reported on Wednesday, occurred barely a week after an alleged attack on NDC supporters in Enugu State reportedly left one person dead.
Although no casualties were reported in the Edo incident as of the time of filing this report, footage circulating online showed damage to property within the party’s secretariat.
The identities of the attackers and their motives remain unknown, as the circumstances surrounding the incident have yet to be fully established.
In a video showing the damaged facility, a woman accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of responsibility. However, the allegation has not been independently verified.
Reacting to the incident, she linked it to the reported attack in Enugu and warned of further political consequences.
“The last one happened in Enugu, where one person died. Now they have brought it to Edo. APC, your end is here,” she said.
Her accusation reflects the political tension surrounding the incident but does not establish the identity of those responsible.
The reported attack has renewed concerns about the safety of opposition parties and their facilities as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
Party secretariats serve as important centres for meetings, organising supporters and coordinating political activities. Attacks on such facilities can disrupt party operations and heighten fears among members.
Civil society groups and political observers have repeatedly warned that political violence could discourage participation, deepen divisions and undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
They have called for prompt investigations into attacks on political organisations and urged security agencies to ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable under the law.
The Edo incident adds to growing concerns about political intolerance and the security of opposition groups ahead of the next general elections.
Establishing the facts, identifying those responsible and preventing further attacks will be crucial to protecting democratic participation and maintaining public confidence in the electoral process
