Peter Obi leaves ADC in a development that has sent ripples across Nigeria’s political landscape. The former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate formally announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Sunday through a detailed and introspective statement on his X account.

In the message shared after church service, Obi opened up about the personal and emotional challenges of navigating Nigeria’s often toxic political environment. He highlighted silent pains, private struggles, and the burdens carried by those committed to sincere service amid intimidation, insecurity, and constant scrutiny.

Obi stressed that his decision was not due to any personal mistreatment by ADC leaders. He expressed continued respect for party Chairman Senator David Mark and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, noting no individual wrongs against him. Instead, he pointed to recurring issues—endless court cases, internal battles, suspicion, and division—allegedly introduced by the same forces that destabilized the Labour Party earlier.

The statement reflects deeper frustrations with a system where humility is viewed as weakness, respect as lack of courage, and compassion as foolishness. Obi reiterated his leadership philosophy centered on service, sacrifice, and uplifting others without oppression or favoritism based on status, tribe, or power.

Fellow Nigerians, good morning.

I woke up this morning after my church service with a deeply reflective heart, and despite every constraint, I felt compelled to share these thoughts with you.

Many people do not truly understand the silent pains some of us carry daily—the…

— Peter Obi (@PeterObi) May 3, 2026

This exit comes months after Obi joined the ADC following his departure from the Labour Party. It raises fresh questions about the unity and stability of opposition platforms ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts note ongoing ADC challenges, including Supreme Court rulings on leadership, nullified conventions, and threats affecting the party’s readiness.

Obi made it clear he holds no desperation for any particular office. His true desperation, he said, is for a Nigeria that consoles grieving mothers, returns displaced persons to their homes, and ensures citizens do not sleep hungry. He questioned why integrity, prudent management of resources in critical sectors like education and healthcare, and adherence to the rule of law are often mislabeled as stinginess or weakness in the country.

Reactions from supporters have been overwhelmingly supportive. Many Obidients pledged to follow him to any platform, emphasizing trust in his character and vision over party structures. Social media has been awash with messages of solidarity, with “A New Nigeria is POssible” trending as followers reaffirm commitment to his ideals of competent, compassionate governance.

Obi’s political trajectory has consistently emphasized transparency, fiscal prudence, and people-centered development. His governance record in Anambra, focus on production over consumption, and appeal to youth and reform-minded Nigerians have built a strong personal brand that transcends temporary party affiliations.

The announcement highlights systemic problems in Nigerian politics, including alleged state interference in opposition parties, legal warfare, and preference for control over genuine nation-building. Obi’s willingness to step away rather than compromise principles reinforces his image as a leader guided by conviction.

As the political realignment continues, attention turns to Obi’s next steps. With electoral timelines approaching, possibilities include further consultations, potential new alliances, or other strategic moves. His core message remains focused on addressing insecurity, poverty, education, healthcare, and creating equal opportunities for all Nigerians.

This latest chapter in Obi’s journey resonates with many citizens disillusioned by traditional politics. It serves as a reminder that meaningful change requires leaders willing to prioritize national interest above personal or partisan comfort. Supporters see his stand as proof of commitment to a functional Nigeria rather than power for its own sake.

Observers will closely monitor developments in the coming days and weeks. Peter Obi’s exit from the ADC adds a new dimension to the evolving opposition dynamics as Nigeria prepares for future elections. His emphasis on justice, compassion, and competent leadership continues to inspire hope among those who believe a new Nigeria remains possible through persistent, principled effort.
