The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the arrest and prosecution of Nafiu Bala Gombe after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) dismissed his claim that he obtained the commission’s access code and uploaded candidates for the 2027 general election.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said INEC’s confirmation that the document circulated by Bala was forged showed a deliberate attempt to undermine the credibility of the electoral body.
The ADC argued that falsely claiming access to INEC’s restricted candidate nomination portal was a serious offence capable of misleading Nigerians, creating political tension and eroding public confidence in the country’s electoral process.
The party urged INEC to refer the matter to law enforcement agencies for a thorough investigation, insisting that Nafiu Bala and anyone involved in producing or circulating the alleged forged document should be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
According to the ADC, the issue goes beyond internal party politics and concerns the protection of Nigeria’s democratic institutions. It warned that failure to punish such actions could encourage others to spread similar falsehoods in future elections.
The party maintained that the incident represents a direct challenge to INEC’s institutional integrity, stressing that the commission’s response would demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic values and peaceful political competition, the ADC expressed confidence that the relevant authorities would take decisive action to ensure that deliberate misinformation does not become part of Nigeria’s democratic process.
