The ADC Nafiu Bala forged resignation letter controversy has exploded into one of Nigeria’s most explosive political scandals of 2026. The factional National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nafiu Bala, has categorically rejected a viral resignation letter being circulated online, insisting that the document is entirely fabricated and that his signature was forged. The denial has plunged the already fractured opposition party into deeper crisis just months before crucial 2027 election preparations are expected to begin.

1. What Happened: The ADC Nafiu Bala Forged Resignation Letter

A resignation letter dated May 18, 2025 began circulating on social media, purportedly authored by Nafiu Bala, in which he allegedly stepped down as a member of the ADC’s National Working Committee effective May 26, 2025.

The letter claimed his resignation was meant to allow for “a smooth coalition process and internal restructuring” within the party. It was shared widely by social media influencer Emma IK Umeh, popularly known as Tcee, on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

The document spread rapidly, triggering a fresh wave of confusion within the already divided ADC at a critical moment just days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced major decisions affecting the party’s structure and leadership recognition.

However, the ADC Nafiu Bala forged resignation letter claim quickly unravelled when Bala himself came out publicly to reject it in strong terms.

2. Nafiu Bala’s Categorical Denial

In a viral video message delivered in Hausa, Bala addressed the nation directly and left no room for ambiguity. He stated:

“My name is Hon. Nafiu Bala, the ADC acting national chairman. I would like to use this opportunity to address a document currently circulating, which claims that I resigned from my position as national vice chairman on May 17th. I wish to state that this paper did not come from me, and that is not my signature on it.”

In a formal written statement issued through the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Dr. Christopher Okechukwu, the party went further, describing the ADC Nafiu Bala forged resignation letter as:

  • Entirely fabricated-not authored or signed by Bala
  • Presented on plain paper-without any official ADC insignia or letterhead
  • Maliciously circulated-by “mischievous elements within and outside the party”
  • Politically motivated-designed to destabilise the ADC’s constitutional leadership

Bala also cited a statement made by former National Chairman Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu himself at a public event, where Nwosu reportedly said: “Nafiu Bala did not resign as the Deputy National Chairman” a statement Bala said directly contradicts and invalidates the forged document.

3. INEC’s Decision and Its Impact on the ADC

The ADC Nafiu Bala forged resignation letter drama erupted against the backdrop of a critical INEC ruling that has reshaped the party’s political landscape.

INEC announced it had removed the names of two prominent figures from its official portal as ADC national officers:

  • Former Senate President David Mark removed as National Chairman
  • Ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola removed as National Secretary

According to The Sun Nigeria, INEC stated it was acting in compliance with preservatory orders issued by the Court of Appeal, directing all parties to maintain the status quo pending the resolution of the legal dispute before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

INEC also confirmed it had received conflicting communications from rival factions, and announced it would suspend recognition of all ADC factions including Bala’s until a court delivers a final judgment. The commission further stated it would not monitor any conventions or congresses organised by the contending groups in the interim.

4. The ADC Leadership Crisis Explained

To understand why the ADC Nafiu Bala forged resignation letter controversy matters so deeply, it is important to understand the roots of the party’s ongoing civil war.

The crisis began when former National Chairman Ralph Okey Nwosu resigned from the ADC. Bala, who was the Deputy National Chairman at the time, argued that the ADC constitution mandated that he automatically assume the chairmanship role following Nwosu’s exit. He declared himself Acting National Chairman in July 2025.

However, a rival faction backed by high-profile political heavyweights including David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola rejected Bala’s claim and positioned their own leadership structure. The ADC, which had been quietly growing as a potential platform for opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections, was suddenly split down the middle.

According to Legit.ng, Bala had accused the rival faction of “handing over party structures to powerful outsiders” in violation of the ADC constitution, which requires any leadership aspirant to have been a financial member of the party for at least one year before assuming office.

5. Key Figures in the ADC Dispute

Understanding the ADC Nafiu Bala forged resignation letter saga requires knowing the key players driving the crisis:

  • Nafiu Bala — Factional Acting National Chairman; former ADC governorship candidate in Gombe State (2023); lawyer; claims constitutional right to the chairmanship.
  • David Mark — Former Senate President; backed by his faction as National Chairman; removed from INEC portal following Court of Appeal order.
  • Rauf Aregbesola — Former Osun State Governor and ex-Minister of Interior; backed as National Secretary by the Mark faction; also removed from INEC portal.
  • Ralph Okey Nwosu — Former National Chairman whose resignation triggered the entire succession dispute.
  • INEC — Has suspended recognition of all factions pending the Federal High Court ruling in suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025.

6. The Ongoing Legal Battle

The ADC Nafiu Bala forged resignation letter crisis is playing out simultaneously in the courts and in the court of public opinion.

Bala filed an originating summons at the Federal High Court in Abuja on September 2, 2025 Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025 seeking orders to restrain INEC from recognising the Mark-Aregbesola faction and to compel the commission to recognise his own leadership.

The Court of Appeal subsequently issued a preservatory order directing all parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum pending the trial court’s determination. This is the order INEC says it is currently complying with.

However, the Mark faction’s spokesman argued that Bala no longer has legal standing in the suit, claiming his tenure ended due to the alleged resignation and the dissolution of the executive committee he belonged to. The dispute over the authenticity of the ADC Nafiu Bala forged resignation letter therefore sits at the very heart of the legal battle because if the letter is genuine, Bala loses locus standi; if it is forged, his case remains valid.

For more background on Nigeria’s electoral laws and party dispute processes, see the Electoral Act 2022 on INEC’s official site.

7. What Happens Next for the ADC

The ADC Nafiu Bala forged resignation letter scandal is more than an internal party squabble. It represents a critical stress test for Nigeria’s democratic institutions particularly INEC and the judiciary to resolve political disputes through legitimate, transparent processes.

Several key outcomes now hang in the balance:

  • The Federal High Court must deliver a clear ruling on who legitimately leads the ADC before the 2027 election season begins.
  • INEC must maintain its commitment to neutrality and court compliance, regardless of political pressure from either faction.
  • The ADC membership genuine grassroots party members across Nigeria deserves clarity on who speaks for their party.
  • If the forged signature allegation is proven, criminal prosecution for forgery must follow to deter future document fraud in Nigerian politics.

Until the courts speak definitively, the ADC remains a party at war with itself, its leadership disputed, its INEC recognition suspended, and its credibility as a viable 2027 opposition platform hanging by a thread.
