Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone successful knee surgery and begun his rehabilitation under the supervision of the club’s medical team.
The Premier League club confirmed the development on Friday, saying the England international would continue his recovery at its Cobham training and medical facility.
The 26-year-old defender missed Chelsea’s last two league matches after sustaining a knee injury during training.
His absence coincided with Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brentford and their subsequent 5-1 victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea said medical assessments were conducted to determine the extent of the injury before doctors recommended surgery.
“Those assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action,” the club stated.
The procedure was successful, and James has already started his rehabilitation programme.
“Reece has already begun his road to recovery and will be supported by the club’s medical department at Cobham during this rehabilitation phase,” Chelsea added.
James’ injury is a setback for the club, given his importance as captain and a key defensive player.
However, Chelsea has yet to announce a specific date for his return to competitive football.
His recovery will depend on his progress during rehabilitation and further assessments by the club’s medical staff.
Chelsea will be keen to ensure that the defender regains full fitness without being rushed back into action.
The Blues are sixth in the Premier League table ahead of their Saturday trip to Everton.
While the team continues its campaign, James will focus on recovering from the injury and working towards a return to full training.
Chelsea is expected to monitor his rehabilitation closely before determining when he can resume competitive action.
