FIFA has confirmed that it is coming to Nigeria to investigate the crisis at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) triggered by the resignation of President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau and related executive changes.
In an official letter dated September 7, 2026, FIFA announced a joint FIFA-CAF assessment mission to Abuja. The mission will review the legal, governance and administrative implications of the recent developments at the NFF.
FIFA and CAF have requested the suspension of the NFF electoral process in order to preserve the status quo while the assessment is ongoing. The Deputy General Secretary of the NFF has been designated as the primary contact for the mission.
During the visit, the FIFA-CAF team is expected to engage with NFF representatives, electoral bodies, federation members, and Nigerian federal government officials, including the National Sports Commission, before any further decisions are taken.
The intervention follows the mass resignation of Gusau and the entire NFF executive board amid public criticism of the federation’s performance and calls for reform in Nigerian football.
