A massive flood that swept through Nepal’s northern Rasuwa district near the border with China has killed at least 95 people and left 384 tourists reported missing, authorities said on Wednesday.
The Nepal Tourism Board confirmed that the missing travellers include 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens. Among the foreigners reported unaccounted for are Americans, Indians, an Australian, Malaysians and Britons, although officials are still working to verify their exact whereabouts.
The disaster struck on August 26, 2026, in the Bhote Koshi River area. Images from the scene show widespread destruction, including flooded villages, damaged buildings, submerged vehicles and rescue workers assisting mud-covered survivors.
Authorities believe the flood may have been triggered by a glacial outburst or an upstream surge originating from Tibet. The surge has disrupted roads, bridges and hydropower projects in the region.
The Nepali government has launched ongoing rescue and recovery operations as emergency teams continue searching for the missing and providing assistance to survivors.
The scale of the disaster has raised serious concerns for the tourism sector in the area, which attracts visitors from around the world to the northern border region.
