1,420 Dead, Voices Silenced: Tinubu Under Fire as Afenifere Sounds Alarm

A faction of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has voiced strong criticism against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of undermining Nigeria’s federal structure and democratic freedoms. In a statement released by its leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and National Publicity Secretary, Prince Justice Faloye, the group expressed alarm over what it described as the “destructuring” of the nation’s foundational principles.

“Instead of restructuring towards a prosperous egalitarian federation, President Tinubu is destructuring Nigeria with his autocratic attack on the fundamental pillars of democratic federalism,” the statement read. The group highlighted concerns over the centralization of power, suppression of free speech, and the erosion of judicial and legislative independence.

Afenifere also condemned the recent ban of the song “Tell Your Papa” by activist-musician Eedris Abdulkareem, viewing it as a suppression of artistic expression and a sign of increasing disregard for dissenting voices in Nigeria. The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) banned the song, citing violations of public decency, a move that has been criticized by human rights organizations like Amnesty International as an abuse of power and a violation of freedom of expression.

The group expressed deep concern over the rising insecurity in the country, citing data from HumAngle’s Conflict Tracker, which reported 1,420 deaths and 537 kidnappings in the first quarter of 2025. Afenifere reiterated its longstanding call for the establishment of state police to address the escalating violence and to enhance the nation’s internal security architecture.

“Politics aside, all management principles and best practices inform us that a single police hierarchy is not sufficient to provide the security required by a nation of our size and diversity,” the group stated. They emphasized the need for effective security strategies, including the banning of open grazing and the promotion of ranching as sustainable alternatives to address conflicts involving Fulani herdsmen and bandits.

Afenifere concluded by urging the Tinubu administration to implement policies that stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty, thereby improving the quality of life for all Nigerians. They called for a recommitment to democratic principles, federalism, and the protection of citizens’ rights to free speech and association.
