Activist Group Demands IGP Disu’s Resignation Over Delta Police Killing

The Take It Back Movement (TIM) has called for the immediate resignation of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu, following the fatal shooting of a 28 year old man by a serving police officer in Effurun, Delta State  an incident that has reignited fierce public debate about police brutality and accountability in Nigeria.

The civil society group condemned what it described as the public execution of a bound suspect by a police officer in Delta State, holding IGP Disu directly responsible for what it termed a catastrophic failure of leadership within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

On April 26, 2026, Mene Ogidi a young musician popularly known as OG Millan  was fatally shot by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman in Effurun, Delta State.
A video of the incident, which circulated rapidly across social media platforms, showed Ogidi seated on the ground with his hands bound tightly behind his back before being shot at close range by an officer dressed in plain clothes.
The footage, less than two minutes long, triggered immediate and widespread outrage from Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, with thousands demanding justice for the slain youth.

In a formal statement signed by its National Coordinator, Juwon Sanyaolu, the Take It Back Movement accused officers of the Nigeria Police Force of deploying excessive force  including the use of tear gas against unarmed citizens who took to the streets in peaceful demonstration to demand justice for Ogidi.
The group described the police response to the protests as a gross violation of democratic norms and an unacceptable abuse of state power.

“We are deeply alarmed by credible reports that instead of restraint and professionalism, officers deployed in Delta State have resorted to the use of tear gas and intimidation against unarmed citizens exercising their constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and expression,” the statement read.|
Activist Group Demands IGP Disu Quit as Police Officer Is Dismissed Over Delta Killing

TIM stated that the killing of Mene Ogidi is not an isolated incident, but rather a reflection of a broader and deeply troubling pattern of impunity and institutional failure within the Nigeria Police Force.
The group demanded an independent and transparent investigation into the killing, insisting that the findings be made public without delay.

Beyond the resignation of the IGP, TIM further demanded the immediate suspension, arrest, and prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman and all other officers linked to the incident.
The group also called for the wholesale removal of all heads of police formations across Delta State, accusing them of dereliction of duty and failure to enforce discipline within their commands.
