Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has made history by winning gold in the men’s shot put at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The powerful thrower produced a superb 21.07m effort in the fifth round to clinch the title, beating New Zealand’s Tom Walsh, who threw 21.03m for silver, and England’s Scott Lincoln, who took bronze with 20.99m.
This victory marks the first time a Nigerian athlete has won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s shot put event.
Enekwechi had previously won silver in 2018 and finished 4th in 2022, making this gold medal a long-awaited and well-deserved reward for his persistence and hard work.
The celebration in the Nigerian camp was massive as Enekwechi finally stood atop the podium after years of near misses.
