Iran Oil Prices Crisis: 5 Shocking Developments as Mojtaba Khamenei Becomes New Supreme Leader

The Iran oil prices crisis has taken a dramatic new turn, sending shockwaves through global energy markets and financial systems worldwide.

On Monday, March 9, 2026, Iran’s state television announced that 56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei  had been officially named the Islamic Republic’s new Supreme Leader. Within hours of that announcement, Iran launched fresh waves of attacks on Israel and multiple Gulf states, pushing crude oil prices past $115 per barrel and triggering one of the most turbulent trading sessions in recent memory.

This is not just a Middle Eastern story. The ripple effects are being felt from Tokyo to Riyadh, and from Wall Street to your local fuel pump.

The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new Supreme Leader was both anticipated and deeply significant. His father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with his wife, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Tehran on February 28, 2026 the opening move in what Iran has since called the “Ramadan War.”

Mojtaba, 56, has long maintained deep ties with Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the paramilitary force that carries out much of Tehran’s military strategy. His elevation to Supreme Leader signals that Iran has no intention of backing down from its current confrontational posture.

What makes his appointment especially consequential is this: Iran’s Revolutionary Guard answers directly to the Supreme Leader. Mojtaba Khamenei will now control the very forces directing missiles, drones, and military strategy across the region. In other words, the war does not end with a new leader it may intensify.

How the Iran Oil Prices Crisis Is Shaking Global Markets

The Iran oil prices crisis has become a serious economic emergency. When crude oil prices crossed $115 a barrel on Monday, it set off a chain reaction in financial markets around the world.

Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 plunged by as much as 7% in early Monday trading, one of its steepest single-day drops in years. South Korea’s Kospi benchmark index also fell sharply by 6%, as investors priced in the growing threat to regional energy security. Other Asian markets followed suit in what analysts described as a panic-driven sell-off rooted in one central fear: if Middle East oil infrastructure keeps getting struck, supply chains will fracture and inflation will climb.

In the United States, economists are warning that surging energy costs could squeeze consumer spending — the very engine that drives the American economy. Fuel prices are expected to climb further if the conflict shows no sign of de-escalation.

Meanwhile, Bahrain’s state oil company declared a force majeure on its shipments after an Iranian drone attack ignited a fire at the kingdom’s sole oil refinery. Force majeure is a legal clause that allows a company to suspend its contractual obligations due to extraordinary circumstances beyond its control.

For many economists, this marks a dangerous turning point. Energy and water infrastructure are now being deliberately targeted, transforming the conflict from a military confrontation into a direct assault on the region’s economic lifelines.

Gulf States Under Fire: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE

The Iran oil prices crisis is being powered, in part, by Tehran’s decision to expand its strikes across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states nations that host American military installations and have, in Iran’s view, aligned themselves with the U.S.-Israeli campaign.

Saudi Arabia issued its sternest warning yet to Iran on Monday, stating publicly that Tehran would become the “biggest loser” if it continued targeting Arab nations. The warning came after drone attacks swept through the kingdom, including an apparent strike on the massive Shaybah oil field, one of the world’s largest. The Saudi Defense Ministry confirmed it had intercepted multiple drones over northern regions, including the Jawf area.

A separate attack in the central city of Kharj killed two Bangladeshi nationals and wounded twelve others on Sunday.

The United Arab Emirates confirmed its air defense systems were actively intercepting Iranian drones and missiles marking the second such engagement within a single day. This level of frequency underscores how relentless the Iranian drone campaign has become.

Bahrain bore some of the heaviest damage, with its refinery fire forcing the force majeure declaration. Iranian attacks have now struck civilian energy and water infrastructure multiple times since the war began, prompting urgent calls from international bodies for restraint.

Israel Intensifies Its Bombing Campaign

While Iran expands its reach across the Gulf, Israel has simultaneously been intensifying its own offensive inside Iranian territory.

For the first time in this conflict, Israeli forces struck oil storage facilities in Tehran, with videos circulating online showing massive flames and thick black smoke rising over the Iranian capital. Israeli military officials justified the strike by claiming the facility was being used to support military logistics for the Revolutionary Guard.

Israeli forces also conducted strikes in Isfahan, targeting what they described as command centers for both the IRGC and the all-volunteer Basij force, as well as a rocket engine production facility and multiple missile launch sites.

In Lebanon, the Israeli campaign against Hezbollah, Iran’s most powerful regional ally continued with devastating effect. A hotel in central Beirut was struck, killing at least four people and marking the first time the Lebanese capital’s heart had been hit. Nearly 400 people have been killed in Lebanon, including 83 children, and over half a million displaced, according to the Lebanese government.

Israeli military officials told reporters they estimate they need roughly three more weeks to complete their stated goal of dismantling Iran’s military capacity though they acknowledge the fight is ongoing at an intense daily pace.

What the World Is Saying

The international community has largely responded with alarm, though few concrete interventions have been proposed.

China, one of the region’s largest consumers of oil and gas, dispatched Special Envoy Zhai Jun to Saudi Arabia for talks with Gulf officials. Beijing called on all parties to halt military operations and condemned any attacks on civilian targets or non-military infrastructure. China also reaffirmed its respect for the sovereignty and security of all Gulf states. Read more on China’s position via Al Jazeera.

South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung warned that the fuel price spike poses a serious threat to his nation’s economy and instructed officials to begin preparing countermeasures.

U.S. President Donald Trump, when pressed on surging oil prices, reportedly said it was a trade-off worth accepting for regional stability though critics have questioned the long-term cost of that position on American households. Full coverage available at NPR.

Investigative outlet Bellingcat has also weighed in, releasing an analysis that it says contradicts the Trump administration’s claim that Iran was responsible for an explosion at an Iranian school on February 28 that reportedly killed 165 people. Bellingcat’s review of video evidence suggests the building hit was an adjacent IRGC base adding another layer of controversy to the information war surrounding this conflict.

Final Thoughts

The Iran oil prices crisis is no longer a distant geopolitical event, it is a fast-moving economic and humanitarian emergency with consequences that stretch far beyond the Middle East. With a new Supreme Leader now in place who has deep IRGC ties and an apparent willingness to escalate, the short-term outlook for regional stability remains grim.

For everyday citizens worldwide, the most immediate impact will be felt at the pump and in rising costs of goods. For the region itself, the targeting of oil refineries and desalination plants raises the stakes from a military conflict to something far more destabilizing: an assault on the basic infrastructure that sustains millions of lives.
