The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a man accused of impersonating the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Segun Aina, in an alleged examination fraud scheme.
The suspect, identified as Nwogba Arinze, was arrested in Anambra State on August 27, 2026, while the alleged mastermind, Nnabuife Nwekpa, remains at large.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, said the investigation began after Aina petitioned the police on August 10 over alleged criminal conspiracy, identity theft and impersonation.
According to the police, the syndicate created fake social media accounts using the JAMB registrar’s identity to deceive candidates and parents and solicit money from them.
Investigators initially traced suspected members of the syndicate to Nasarawa and Katsina states but later discovered that some of those being tracked were actually victims who had been defrauded.
Police also alleged that Arinze posed as the registrar’s personal assistant and used the bank account and debit card of his late nephew, Edeh Chimezie Benedict, to conceal suspected illegal transactions.
The account and card had reportedly been given to Arinze on July 31 to assist with funeral arrangements.
The police said Arinze is cooperating with investigators as efforts continue to arrest Nwekpa and identify other members of the alleged identity-theft syndicate.
