Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed how he has successfully managed diabetes for more than 40 years, attributing his health and vitality to a disciplined lifestyle that includes proper diet, regular exercise, adequate rest, routine medical check-ups, and adherence to prescribed medication.

Obasanjo spoke during the launch of the “Lagos to the World” expedition, a global road journey designed to promote cancer awareness, encourage early detection, and foster African integration.

The former president praised the initiative, which was conceived by entrepreneur and BMW enthusiast Erik Nwagwu in memory of his late mother and sister who died from cancer. He described the project as a meaningful effort that could save lives through awareness and education.

Reflecting on his personal health journey, Obasanjo disclosed that he was diagnosed with diabetes more than four decades ago and has continued to manage the condition effectively through healthy living.

According to him, maintaining a strict routine has enabled him to remain physically active. He said he plays squash three times a week and pays close attention to his diet, stressing that unhealthy eating habits often come with serious health consequences.

Obasanjo also highlighted the importance of rest, noting that adequate sleep and recovery are essential components of good health, especially as people grow older.

Summarising his health philosophy, he introduced what he called “DREMS” — Diet, Rest, Exercise, and Medical care — as the pillars of a healthy lifestyle and effective disease management.

He urged Nigerians, particularly older adults, to embrace regular medical screenings and early diagnosis, emphasizing that preventive healthcare remains one of the best ways to detect and manage illnesses before they become severe.

Speaking at the event, Nwagwu explained that the “Lagos to the World” expedition would take place in stages and aims to raise awareness about prostate cancer, provide free screenings through a partnership with Zuri Health, promote a positive image of Nigeria, and encourage greater African unity and cooperation.
