Dubai has declared 10 days of official mourning following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the younger brother of the emirate’s Ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Sheikh Ahmed passed away on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the age of 76. The Dubai Ruler’s Court announced the news and directed that flags fly at half-mast on all government and national buildings throughout the mourning period.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum paid a personal tribute to his late brother, praying for God’s mercy and stating that although he is absent from their eyes, he remains in their prayers and hearts. Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed also expressed deep sorrow and offered condolences to the family.
Sheikh Ahmed served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security. He was also Chairman of Al Wasl Football Club and led major business interests in real estate and investments through A.R.M. Holding and the Dubai Real Estate Centre.
A graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, he previously commanded Dubai’s Central Military Region and made significant contributions to the emirate’s security, sporting and business sectors.
