FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced that the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project will not proceed.
In a statement released on behalf of the FIFA President, Infantino explained that the proposal was intended to strengthen FIFA Member Associations, particularly those in need of support, but only if a majority were in favour and after proper consultation.
However, after listening to all views, Infantino stated that the project has created divisions that are no longer in the best interest of the original objective.
“Our purpose has always been — and will always be — to unite and improve. As a result, this proposal will not proceed,” the statement read.
Infantino further announced his intention to bring all interested parties together in the coming days and weeks to continue growing football worldwide, especially in countries that need the most support.
The decision comes after strong opposition from UEFA and several other stakeholders, who had threatened to boycott FIFA competitions if the plan to involve private investors in the World Cup and other competitions went ahead.
The withdrawal of the FFE proposal is expected to ease tensions between FIFA and European football authorities, at least in the short term.
This development marks a significant U-turn for FIFA on one of its most debated recent initiatives.
