Iran has warned of “unforeseen consequences” after a Ukrainian strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea reportedly killed one sailor and injured several others.
The warning was issued on Monday by Iran’s Foreign Ministry. Spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei described the attack as a deliberate violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Baqaei condemned Ukraine’s actions, saying the strike was “illegal and unjustified” and insisted that Tehran would respond.
He said, “This action by Ukraine was an absolutely illegal and unjustified act, contrary to the Charter of the United Nations… and will certainly not go unanswered by us.”
The incident occurred on Saturday after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Kyiv had carried out long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, targeting vessels allegedly transporting military cargo linked to Iran.
According to Iranian officials, the attack caused an explosion aboard the vessel, killing one crew member and leaving several others injured.
Baqaei also demanded that Ukraine be held accountable, stating that the Ukrainian government must answer for the attack.
The strike marks a significant escalation, bringing the Caspian Sea previously regarded as a relatively stable region into the wider conflict surrounding Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Iran has not disclosed the nature of its planned response, but its warning has raised concerns that tensions between Tehran and Kyiv could deepen in the coming days.
