Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has launched a series of health initiatives, including the distribution of 300 digital blood pressure monitors to public servants and political appointees.
The governor said the initiative was introduced to tackle the growing number of sudden deaths linked to hypertension among government officials.
“We procured these digital blood pressure monitors to encourage regular health checks. Early detection will help prevent avoidable deaths associated with hypertension,” Yusuf said.
Yusuf also inaugurated a new Sickle Cell Centre and an office complex for the Kano State Centre for Disease Control.
According to him, the Sickle Cell Centre will provide free diagnosis, counselling, treatment, follow-up care and health education for patients living with sickle cell disease.
He also flagged off the distribution of free maternal and Accident and Emergency medical commodities, alongside hospital bed sheets, at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital in Kano.
The governor said the new disease control centre would strengthen surveillance and improve the state’s ability to detect and respond to outbreaks such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and meningitis.
He praised development partners, healthcare workers, traditional rulers and the Ministry of Health for supporting the state’s healthcare reforms.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, said the administration had made significant investments in the health sector since taking office.
He revealed that maternal mortality had dropped from more than 1,300 recorded cases in 2023 to about 300 in 2026, attributing the improvement to the government’s interventions.
Executive Secretary of the Hospital Management Board, Dr. Mansur Nagoda, described the projects as a major boost to healthcare delivery, saying sustained investments have transformed the sector across Kano State.
