The House of Representatives has taken a major step toward the creation of state police by adopting a report on the proposal and approving 18 key constitutional amendment clauses.
The decision was reached during Thursday’s plenary session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
The approved provisions are part of the National Assembly’s ongoing efforts to review the 1999 Constitution, with the aim of strengthening governance, improving security, and enhancing the performance of critical institutions across Nigeria.
The endorsement of the state police report represents a significant breakthrough in the push for decentralized policing, a proposal that has gained momentum amid rising insecurity across several parts of the country.
Lawmakers are expected to continue deliberations on additional constitutional reforms as the amendment process progresses. More details on the specific clauses approved by the House are expected to emerge in the coming days.
