The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kano State Command, has launched a statewide awareness campaign to protect telecommunication masts and other critical infrastructure as the rainy season intensifies.
The campaign, flagged off on Friday, aims to educate residents on the dangers of telecom installations during heavy rainfall and discourage vandalism and other activities that could damage the facilities.
Speaking at the launch, Kano State Commandant Mohammed Agalama warned residents against tampering with telecommunication masts, underground cables, power facilities and other telecom infrastructure.
He described such acts as economic sabotage that threaten public safety and disrupt essential services.
According to Agalama, telecom infrastructure plays a vital role in communication, banking, emergency response, security operations and the nation’s economy.
He noted that heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds increase the risks around telecom masts, making it necessary for residents to exercise caution during the rainy season.
The commandant advised members of the public not to seek shelter under telecom masts during storms. He also urged residents to report damaged or suspicious installations to the nearest NSCDC office or relevant authorities.
Agalama stressed that protecting critical infrastructure is a shared responsibility between security agencies and the public.
He directed all 44 divisional officers in Kano State to immediately take the campaign to communities by engaging traditional rulers, youth groups, market associations, schools, religious organisations and other stakeholders.
The NSCDC boss reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) across the state.
He warned that anyone caught vandalising or interfering with telecom facilities would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Agalama also appealed to residents to provide timely and credible information that would help security agencies prevent vandalism and ensure uninterrupted telecommunication services.
The campaign will be coordinated by the Command’s Department of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Protection under the leadership of DCC Victor Bala Muhd.
The NSCDC said the initiative combines public awareness with strict enforcement to protect Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure from weather-related damage and criminal activities while ensuring the safety of residents during the rainy season
