President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
About 250,000 military personnel are expected to benefit from the new package, which takes effect from September 1, 2026.
Under the revised salary structure, officers above the rank of colonel — including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals, and Generals — will receive a 30 per cent increase.
Personnel from the rank of colonel down to warrant officer will enjoy a 50 per cent salary increase, while those from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 per cent boost.
The decision is seen as part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to improve the welfare of security personnel and boost morale amid the country’s security challenges.
Many stakeholders have welcomed the approval, describing it as a timely intervention that recognises the sacrifices of members of the armed forces.
The salary review is expected to provide significant relief to military families, especially junior ranks who will benefit from the highest percentage increase.
As the September 1 implementation date approaches, attention will focus on the seamless rollout of the new pay structure across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
