The Joint Revenue Board (JRB) has commended Delta and Ondo states for adopting tax harmonisation reforms designed to eliminate multiple taxation and improve Nigeria’s business environment.
The initiative seeks to simplify the tax system by consolidating more than 100 existing taxes and levies into nine standardised categories.
The board disclosed that 21 states had adopted the Model Harmonised Taxes and Levies Law as of October 29, 2026.
Its Executive Secretary, Olusegun Adesokan, said the reforms would provide clearer tax obligations, eliminate overlapping charges and curb unauthorised revenue collections.
Multiple taxation has remained a major challenge for businesses across Nigeria, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises frequently confronted with demands from different government agencies.
The harmonisation policy is expected to promote transparency, encourage voluntary tax compliance and create a more predictable environment for investors.
However, the success of the reforms will depend on effective implementation, proper monitoring and cooperation between state and local government authorities.
For businesses in Delta and Ondo, the ultimate measure of success will be whether the policy translates into fewer levies, reduced financial burdens and a simpler tax payment process.
