Overview: Boko Haram Attack Kills Nigerian Soldiers in Benisheikh

A devastating Boko Haram attack kills Nigerian soldiers and their commanding officer in Borno State, sending shockwaves across Nigeria and the military establishment.
In the early hours of Thursday, April 9, 2026, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)-backed insurgents launched a deadly coordinated assault on multiple military formations across Borno State.

The worst hit was the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area — a strategic military base under Operation HADIN KAI.
The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 18 soldiers and officers, including a Brigadier-General, making it one of the most devastating single-day losses for the Nigerian Army in recent memory.

President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow and described the fallen troops as “unforgettable heroes” — but revelations from military sources have raised urgent questions about equipment failures that may have contributed to the high death toll.

What Happened? Timeline of the Deadly Boko Haram Attack on Nigerian Soldiers

The night of April 8–9, 2026 saw Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters launch a multi-pronged assault on at least four communities in Borno State simultaneously.
Military and civilian sources painted a chilling picture of an extremely organised and well-coordinated offensive.

10:30 PM — First Wave: Pulka and Banki Ruwa (Gwoza LGA)

The first wave of attacks began at approximately 10:30 p.m. in Pulka and Banki Ruwa in Gwoza Local Government Area, where insurgents reportedly overran a military base.
Several military assets were set ablaze during the assault, and construction equipment belonging to the Borno State Government was also destroyed.
Attackers looted food supplies from shops in Pulka before withdrawing from the area.

12:30 AM — Second Wave: Benisheikh and Ngamdu (Kaga LGA)

Hours later, at approximately 12:30 a.m. on April 9, 2026, insurgents launched their most devastating strike — a coordinated attack on Benisheikh and Ngamdu, located about 100 kilometres west of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

According to the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), the terrorists attempted to breach the defensive perimeter of the 29 Task Force Brigade military installation at Benisheikh.
The attack targeted troops of Operation HADIN KAI at the Brigade Headquarters, and it lasted several hours.

Security sources suggested that the assault on Ngamdu may have been a diversionary tactic aimed at delaying reinforcement from the Nigerian Air Force, while the attack on Banki Ruwa served as a decoy to facilitate operations in Pulka.

Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah: The Highly Decorated Hero Who Fell

Among the most devastating losses in this Boko Haram attack on Nigerian soldiers was the death of Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, the Brigade Commander of the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh.

The Presidency officially confirmed his death, with President Tinubu personally naming him in a State House press statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The Chairman of Kaga Local Government Area, Zanna Ajimi, also confirmed Braimah’s death, telling journalists: “I can confirm to you that the brigade commander is among the casualties.”

Who Was Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah?

Brig.-Gen. Braimah was an exceptionally educated and experienced military officer.
He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army in September 2000.

His academic credentials included:

  • Master’s in National Security Management and War Studies — National Defence University, Islamabad
  • Master of Arts in International Relations and Strategic Studies — Benue State University (2004–2006)
  • Master of Arts in Defence Studies — King’s College, London (2016–2017)
  • Diploma in Strategic Leadership and Management — Chartered Management Institute (CMI)
  • United Nations Observer (2011–2012)

Also killed alongside the General were his second-in-command and the Imam of the Brigade, along with several officers and soldiers.
In total, at least 18 soldiers and officers lost their lives in the combined attacks across the four communities.

Disturbing Revelation: Did a Faulty Armoured Vehicle Cost the General His Life?

While the official military account highlighted the bravery of the fallen soldiers, a troubling allegation has emerged from sources within the military.

According to multiple military insiders who spoke to Sahara Reporters, Brigadier-General Braimah attempted to retreat from the overrun base using a bulletproof armoured vehicle but the vehicle reportedly failed to start, trapping him in the line of fire.

Sources stated that General Braimah and other troops rushed into an armoured personnel carrier to pull back from the frontline under heavy fire.
“However, the vehicle failed to start. That was how he was captured and eventually killed by the insurgents,” a military insider revealed.

This allegation raises serious questions about military equipment maintenance and welfare — an issue that President Tinubu himself acknowledged in his statement, pledging to “provide more of the equipment needed.”

Tinubu’s Response to Boko Haram Attack That Killed Nigerian Soldiers: “Their Sacrifices Will Not Be in Vain”

President Bola Tinubu responded swiftly to the deadly attack, issuing a State House press statement expressing deep sadness and extending condolences to the families of the slain soldiers and the Nigerian military.

Key Points from President Tinubu’s Statement

  • Described the fallen troops as “unforgettable heroes” whose sacrifices must never be forgotten.
  • Called the insurgents’ attack “a sign of desperation” in the face of sustained military offensives.
  • Urged the Military High Command and frontline troops not to lose heart or be discouraged.
  • Pledged that the government would “always stand by the Armed Forces” and provide more equipment.
  • Called on Nigerians and the media to support the military and avoid narratives that undermine troop morale.
  • Extended condolences to the government and people of Borno State, pledging continued collaboration for lasting peace.

Tinubu Frames Attack as Sign of Insurgent Desperation

Rather than treating the attack as evidence of military weakness, Tinubu framed it as desperation by a weakening enemy.
He stated that the Armed Forces had been conducting “sustained, intense land and air offensives” against the insurgents, neutralising many of their fighters and commanders — and that the counterattack was a sign of panic from a cornered enemy.

A Deadly Pattern: This Boko Haram Attack on Nigerian Soldiers Is Not an Isolated Incident

The Benisheikh attack is not an isolated incident, it is part of a deeply alarming pattern of escalating insurgent attacks on military formations in Borno State throughout early 2026.

Recent Timeline of Attacks in 2026

In early March 2026, the Nigerian military lost at least three commanding officers in charge of forward operations bases following attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP at different locations within just seven days in Borno State.

The three officers killed in March were:

  • Major U.I. Mairiga — Commander, Mayenti Base
  • Lt-Col Umar Faruq — Commander, Kukawa Base and 101 Brigade
  • Lt-Col S.I. Iliyasu — Commander, Konduga Base

Additionally, in the weeks prior to the April 9 attack, Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters attacked military bases in Baga, Buratai, and Ajilari near Maiduguri, with the stated objective of destabilising forward operating positions and weakening troop morale.

Insurgents linked to ISWAP also targeted a Forward Base near Banki Junction along the Bama–Gwoza Road, killing an Army Major and several soldiers.
General Braimah’s death now adds to a devastating toll of senior officers lost in just three months.

Impact on Borno State: Communities Left Traumatised After Boko Haram Attack Kills Nigerian Soldiers

The ripple effects of the April 9 attacks extend far beyond the military bases themselves.
Civilian communities across Borno State were left traumatised, and critical infrastructure was damaged.

What Was Destroyed?

  •  Several military vehicles and hardware were set ablaze inside the base
  •  Insurgents set fire to vehicles along the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway
  • Road construction equipment belonging to Decency Associates (a Borno State Government contractor) was destroyed
  • Shops near the military formation in Benisheikh were burned
  •  Food supplies were looted from civilian shops in Pulka town
  •  Stray bullets reportedly injured civilians in Pulka community

Road Closure and Travel Disruption

A traveller on the Damaturu–Maiduguri highway, Babagana Goni, confirmed that the road was shut down for several hours following the attack, with burnt military equipment visible in Benisheikh.

The insurgents reportedly operated in Ngamdu community for more than three hours before security forces could mount an effective response, underlining the scale and audacity of the operation.

Conclusion: Nigeria Must Urgently Respond as Boko Haram Attack Kills Nigerian Soldiers Again

The devastating events of April 9, 2026 are a sobering reminder that Nigeria’s war against Boko Haram and ISWAP is far from over.
The fact that a Boko Haram attack kills Nigerian soldier including a well-decorated Brigadier-General at the brigade headquarters level signals a troubling escalation in the insurgents’ capability and audacity.

While President Tinubu’s condolences are appreciated, Nigerians and the international community are calling for concrete, urgent action on multiple fronts:

  • Improved military equipment maintenance to prevent tragedies like a faulty armoured vehicle
  • Enhanced troop welfare and morale support for frontline soldiers
  • Better intelligence gathering to anticipate coordinated multi-front attacks
  • Increased air support to counter insurgent diversionary tactics
  • Protection of civilian communities in affected local government areas

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has already called on President Tinubu to “stop the killings of military officers and other security agents immediately”, urging the government to place greater priority on human lives.

The nation mourns Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah and his 17 fallen comrades.
Their courage in the face of an overwhelming assault will not be forgotten.
As President Tinubu rightly declared they are Nigeria’s unforgettable heroes.
