The Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has warned foreign diplomatic missions against making unguarded comments, disparaging remarks, or unsolicited lectures on democracy as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
The minister issued the warning on Thursday, September 17, 2026, during a diplomatic briefing with members of the Diplomatic Corps at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. The engagement marked her first formal meeting with the Diplomatic Corps since her appointment in April 2026.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasised that Nigeria remains Africa’s largest democracy and that developments within the country carry significant regional and international implications. She affirmed the commitment of the Tinubu led administration to conducting peaceful, free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
The minister called on foreign missions to adhere strictly to established diplomatic channels and to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty. She stressed the need for mutual respect in all engagements concerning the country’s internal political processes.
The briefing underscored the government’s expectation that diplomatic partners will refrain from public comments that could be perceived as interference in Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the general elections.
