The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has intensified its waterways safety campaign in Abaji Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), educating residents on safe navigation and environmental protection as water levels rise during the rainy season.
The sensitisation exercise was organised by the Authority’s Abuja Area/Liaison Office to promote safe boating practices and encourage environmental responsibility among waterfront communities.
Speaking at the event, the Area Manager, Hajia Aisha Eri, commended residents for their cooperation and reaffirmed NIWA’s commitment to protecting inland waterways and the people whose livelihoods depend on them.
She urged boat operators, community leaders and residents to strictly comply with safety regulations and environmental guidelines to reduce accidents and prevent the loss of lives and property during the rainy season.
The Emir of Kwali, Alhaji Adamu Aguma, praised NIWA for the initiative and pledged the support of traditional institutions in promoting compliance with waterways safety regulations across riverine communities.
The awareness campaign is part of a nationwide directive by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, requiring regular engagement with waterfront communities on marine safety and environmental protection.
NIWA’s Acting Managing Director, Alhaji Umar Yusuf Girei, has also directed all Area Offices to prioritise the campaign as part of efforts to reduce boat accidents and preserve Nigeria’s inland waterways.
The Authority said the campaign will continue across other waterfront communities in the FCT and beyond as part of its broader strategy to improve marine safety and protect the environment.
