Presidential candidate Peter Obi has declared that he has no objection to the legitimate scrutiny of his academic certificates and records.
In a statement, Obi responded to reports circulating on social media about a legal action seeking Certified True Copies of his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, awarded by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in 1984, as well as other academic records related to his admission and studies.
“I wish to state clearly that I have absolutely no objection to the release of these records,” he said.
Obi formally requested that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, make his academic certificates, records and other official documents available upon legitimate request, within the limits permitted by law. He also stated that he has no objection to other educational institutions he attended, within and outside Nigeria, releasing his records in accordance with applicable laws and procedures.
The former Anambra State Governor emphasised his belief in transparency and accountability, especially for those seeking public office. He noted that public scrutiny must be fair, lawful and applied consistently to everyone who aspires to lead the nation.
As a presidential candidate, Obi said he welcomes legitimate public interest in his background, qualifications and record. He added that he is prepared to subject himself to the level of scrutiny reasonably expected of anyone seeking the highest office in the country.
In the same spirit, he encouraged every presidential candidate to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for legitimate public scrutiny, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen public confidence and rebuild trust.
“Leadership must reflect the values we expect from the society we hope to build. If we desire a Nigeria founded on transparency, integrity, accountability, and respect for institutions, those values must begin with those who seek to lead it,” Obi stated.
He concluded by welcoming the scrutiny of his academic background and reaffirming his commitment to openness and accountability.
