The 10th edition of the Port Harcourt International Marathon will hold on November 14, with organisers expecting about 10,000 runners from Nigeria, West Africa and East Africa.
The race, which covers 21 kilometres, marks the event’s transition from a national competition to an international marathon.
Speaking at a media briefing, Convener Goodluck Azunwena said the anniversary edition represents more than a sporting event.
According to him, the marathon will promote tourism, healthy living, youth empowerment and economic growth under the theme, “Green Race.”
“As we celebrate a decade of purpose, we are reopening this chapter with renewed energy and a bigger vision,” Azunwena said.
He disclosed that previous editions attracted about 5,000 runners, but participation is expected to double this year because of growing regional interest.
Azunwena added that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure a successful and hitch-free event.
Marathon official Diri Dikibujuri said the 2026 edition has been tagged “Port Harcourt to the World.”
She explained that the event will welcome athletes from across Nigeria, as well as other West and East African countries.
Dikibujuri said the “Green Race” theme reflects renewal, environmental sustainability and Port Harcourt’s identity as the Garden City.
She added that the marathon will also promote culture, education, environmental awareness, youth development and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
