Akwa Ibom Police have uncovered and neutralised explosive devices at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre following a coordinated security operation that averted what authorities described as an imminent tragedy.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfom John, disclosed in a statement on Monday that the breakthrough followed credible intelligence from correctional authorities regarding suspicious items found around the facility.
Following the report, Commissioner of Police Baba Azare ordered the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, BomPol Base 38, Uyo, alongside other tactical teams to secure the area.
A coordinated search and sweep led to the recovery of two 90mm high explosive rounds, a 45cm length of burning fuse, a pair of pincers, a flat screwdriver, two 12mm iron chisels, and a 6cm conduit iron pipe.
The EOD team successfully rendered the explosive devices safe, neutralising any threat to lives and critical infrastructure. Security around the facility has since been reinforced with increased surveillance, access control, and continuous patrols.
Authorities confirmed that no casualties were recorded and that discreet investigations have commenced to determine the origin of the explosives and identify those responsible.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station. The command warned that it would not tolerate any attempt to undermine public safety or target critical institutions across Akwa Ibom State.
