Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is reportedly closing in on a political partnership with former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi as his preferred running mate for the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Sources familiar with opposition negotiations said the move followed extensive consultations among key political stakeholders seeking to build a formidable alliance capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The possible Atiku-Amaechi ticket is expected to alter the dynamics of the 2027 presidential contest, coming at a time when opposition leaders are exploring strategic alliances ahead of what is projected to be a highly competitive election.
Political analysts say the pairing could offer geographical balance, combining Atiku’s influence in the North-East with Amaechi’s strong political connections in the South-South region.
The development follows the emergence of another opposition arrangement involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, further increasing expectations of a multi-cornered battle for the presidency in 2027.
Although Amaechi had previously denied interest in becoming a vice-presidential candidate, sources said he agreed to the proposal after receiving assurances of a major role in the campaign structure and a possible future administration.
The reported choice of Amaechi has also revived discussions about Atiku’s 2023 presidential campaign, particularly his decision not to pick former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike as his running mate, a decision that deepened divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Meanwhile, Atiku, during the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming that the government has moved away from the ideals associated with the June 12 democratic struggle.
He accused the APC-led government of weakening opposition politics through political pressure, defections and what he described as the misuse of government institutions.
The former Vice President called on Nigerians to protect democratic values and uphold the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists.
The ADC has yet to officially confirm the reported Atiku-Amaechi arrangement, but party sources said talks are at an advanced stage as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify.
