The Federal Government has approved five evacuation flights to repatriate Nigerians from South Africa amid renewed concerns over xenophobic attacks and the safety of foreign nationals in the country.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the first evacuation flight is expected to airlift approximately 270 Nigerians from Johannesburg, marking the beginning of a broader voluntary return programme.
The ministry disclosed that more than 500 Nigerians have so far been screened and cleared for evacuation. To accommodate additional applicants, the screening and verification exercise has been extended until June 10, 2026.
The evacuation flights will be operated by Air Peace, with departures subject to the issuance of the required permits and regulatory clearances by the relevant authorities.
Government officials stated that the programme remains open to Nigerians who wish to return home, noting that registration for voluntary repatriation is ongoing as more citizens continue to indicate interest.
The latest move underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of its citizens abroad amid rising concerns over xenophobia and security challenges in South Africa.
